re: anne/diana fight
it was easy to at first think the anne/diana fight is anne jumping to conclusions or overreacting, but the more i think about it, the more i realize its truly just some really tight and effective writing on the showrunnners’ part…! their fight is an important moment, not only for their friendship, but also for several plot points in the show coming together.
we know from last episode/anne’s conversation with the fortune teller that anne’s greatest fear is essentially that she is not worthy of love because of who she is/what she is/what she looks like, and that no one will ever be able to love her, romantically or otherwise. when diana argues that a real relationship between herself and jerry would be “ridiculous” because of those implied class differences, its a complete confirmation of anne’s fears. diana can’t love jerry because he is poor, because his family isn’t proper enough, because he isn’t smart enough etc. etc. obviously i cant blame diana for thinking this way, because she isn’t necessarily wrong about real courtship between her and jerry not being feasible, but that’s not really what she says to anne. she doubles down on the class difference instead.
and this all comes one? two? days after anne has realized her feelings for gilbert, and then immediately been slapped in the face by gilbert courting a woman who is more conventionally attractive than her, undeniably much wealthier, and has a family with much higher class/public/reputational standing. in combination, these things feel like betrayal from two of the people she cares about most in avonlea (or even loves!).
diana is right when she says she has always stood by anne, but she still hasn’t really challenged the status quo when it comes to class. anne is the exception to the rule that says she shouldn’t associate with poorer people, so diana has never had to think past it. jerry, on the other hand, can’t be the exception when anne already is, so now there is contention between what her family wants for her, and confronting the prejudices that lie within that. i think its clear that diana does have feelings for jerry considering the slight jealousy she showed when tillie commented that he was tall/handsome, but she’s pushing him away because she’s young, and of course its easier to conform than go against how she’s ‘supposed’ to act.
im so curious to see where this fight leads anne + diana + jerry, but im also really impressed at how cleanly this brought the gilbert/winnifred, gilbert/anne, anne/diana, and diana/jerry plotlines together! and damn, amybeth and delila can really fuxking act . . . can we please have some growth. can we PLEASE have some growth
re: episode topic
ngl its kind of sending that the overarching theme of this episode was ethical journalism / freedom of speech like this show really just pulls a topic out of a hat every episode...but i enjoyed it a lot!! i cant believe prissy andrews is the feminist queen we needed, im happy that they've brought back her character to act as a foil to the rest of the andrews family and push social change in avonlea. it was also nice to see mrs. lynde on anne's side for once, and to have josie pye eventually warming up to anne despite their contention.
re: the repressed late 1800's romance
GODDDDD i really have this virus for real...i did not expect this episode to deliver anything on this front but it really fuxking did!! and the dynamix of that conversation outside on the porch was like *subtext* *subtext* *subtext*
>shouldn't we be arguing about something right now?
>probably. you wanna start?
>i can't think of anything.
>me neither.
>huh.
[prolonged silence]
>after all these tears, who knew we'd make such a great . . . T-E-A-M?
first of all, it is genuinely hilarious to me that for all three seasons gilbert's only method of flirting has been either 1. prolonged staring or 2. spelling as a callback to their school rivalry. and he did both this episode. cut to Gilbert_staring_fondly_at_Anne_from_afar_at_Miss_Stacey's_house.jpeg. which then led him to follow her outside and say...THAT...and then have a weird are-we-about-to-kiss moment before anne is like Hi Remember Yesterday When You Were Courting Winnie? and bolts.
basically i am so ready for the love triangle to come to full fruition in the narrative sense where gilbert has to choose between winnifred, who is easy to be with, doesn't challenge him, and whose family will provide him a clear and much less difficult path to the future he desires, or anne, who he has strong feelings for, doesn't understand well, and is equally as poor/orphaned as him. now thats a good love triangle!! metaphorical choice tied up in the physical one!!
the difference between winnifred and anne is obvious when mary dies, and gilbert is so upset that he isn't sure if he even wants to be a doctor anymore when even he couldn't prevent her death. winnifred tells him that he'd probably be good at some other career if he tried it, and its not a big deal that hes going to quit the apprenticeship with dr ward. anne, on the other hand, reminds gilbert that becoming a doctor is his dream for a reason, and that caring deeply about/being affected by death is always the right thing, and that the family of his patients would want him to feel that way. basically winnifred says its ok to give up on your dreams while anne reminds him he'd be a great doctor and that he can't run away now...basically the choice is obvious but gilbert is repressed as all hell so who can blame him.
re: misc
basically im holding out for another s1 parallel next episode w/ firefighting since the school will be burning down like the gillis' household did in the early episodes...i would like to see it. also i hope there is a soundtrack for this season because the tender romantic piano music every episode has slayed
